Empowering Georgia’s future healthcare professionals to speak out for a healthier Georgia.
Each fall H-STAT hosts a candlelight vigil downtown in honor of all those who have died due to lack of access to healthcare. Please check back in the fall for details.
Healthcare Advocacy Training
In order to make our advocacy efforts effective, we need to voice our agenda in the ways that are most likely to be heard by those in power. We realize that many students who wish to engage with policymakers have had little prior experience doing so. Therefore H-STAT hosts an annual healthcare advocacy training session each spring to teach students ways in which they can most effectively engage with the political system. The 2017 training session will take place on Saturday, February 4th. Please see our events calendar for additional details and to RSVP.
Each year, a number of H-STAT students have the chance to meet with our state legislators during the Georiga legislative session to discuss our legislative agenda. Please check back in the winter for details about the 2017 breakfast.
Closing the Coverage Gap
The failure of the state of Georgia to expand Medicaid leaves more than 400,000 Georgians in the coverage gap (those whose income is greater than the standard Medicaid eligibility level but is less than the ACA insurance exchange eligibility level).
In response to the state’s decision, H-STAT has created a presentation, “Medicaid Expansion 101,” to educate community members and health professionals about the importance of expanding Medicaid in Georgia. By informing our communities about the issue, we hope to increase the pressure on the state legislature to reverse their decision. Would you like us to present in your community? Or would you like to be trained to give the “Medicaid Expansion 101” presentation yourself? Use the contact form below to learn more.
H-STAT also believes that providing a personal face to this issue will help inspire policy change. Through our “Patient Stories Initiative” we collect stories from patients who lack health insurance and will share these moving stories as a way to illustrate the importance of expanding healthcare coverage. Use the contact form below to learn more or get involved.
