On behalf of the H-STAT Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) Student Task Force, we would like to inform you about the inaugural Trauma-Informed Care Training Day on Saturday, October 19, 2019 from 8:00am-1:00pm at the Emory School of Medicine.

The H-STAT ACEs Student Task Force is an interdisciplinary team of health students dedicated to equipping the next generation of health professionals with the knowledge and skills needed to improve the care of people impacted by ACEs and other forms of trauma. While many definitions of trauma exist, the definition that guides our efforts is any event or circumstance that overwhelms a person’s ability to adapt. Given the known relationship between ACEs and health across the lifespan, we feel that this is a crucial and pressing topic for future healthcare professionals.

The goal of the training day is to bring together students and trainees from different academic institutions and fields (e.g. medicine, nursing, public health, and social work) to build practical skills that we can apply in our interactions with people who may have experienced acute trauma (e.g. violent event) and/or chronic trauma (e.g. toxic stress).

The training day will include a keynote address followed by a group of hands-on, skill-based workshops on topics that will equip trainees to better care for people who have experienced trauma.

Sessions we are hoping to offer include:

-How to perform a trauma-informed physical exam

-Asking children about sensitive information

-Community Resiliency Model/self-regulatory skills

-Trauma-Informed Care in Primary Care Setting

-What is Re-Traumatization and How to Avoid it

-Trauma-Informed Parenting Techniques

While a formal invitation will be circulated later this summer, we hope you will consider advertising within your program and encouraging your classmates, colleagues and volunteers to attend. Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns, and how we may better facilitate your participation and attendance in October.

We ask that students/trainees express non-binding interest here to help us plan for the event.
