Sponsor: HB 1139 Chances are “Slim to None”
State representative Ron Stephens (R – Savannah), the sponsor of House Bill 1139, which would have raised the tobacco tax by $1 per pack of cigarettes, told WABE today that he sees little chance of the bill passing and is withdrawing the bill. But he’s not giving up on the idea.
Stephens has introduced a constitutional amendment that would let Georgians vote on the increase, and he has not ruled out trying to attach it to another bill.
While raising the tobacco tax had the support of many legislators and, according to polls, a majority of Georgians, it lacked support from the Republican Party leadership in the House and Senate, which would have been critical for its passage.
